The Koopgoot in the city centre of Rotterdam

The Shopping Gutter, or Koopgoot in Dutch, is what the people of Rotterdam call it. Officially named Beurstraverse, no locals use that name. Rotterdamers call it Koopgoot because it lies one level beneath street level. For example, shops like Hema have their basement entrance opening directly into the Koopgoot. The passage also connects the shopping streets Hoogstraat and Lijnbaan. Shoppers can easily spend a whole day in Rotterdam’s city centre, which stretches roughly from the Market Hall to the Lijnbaan, and from Weena (Central Station) to Binnenwegplein.
