The Rottemeren near Rotterdam
The Park, Museum Park, and Lake Kralingen are among the most interesting places for tourists. They are not far from Rotterdam’s city centre and feature several restaurants. If you have more time, there are many other parks to explore, such as Prinsemolen Park, Park Rozenburg, the Roof Park, Vroesen Park, Zuider Park, Park Zestienhoven, Brienenoord Island, and numerous smaller parks.
Rotterdam also has beautiful gardens, including the Historical Park Schoonoord and the botanical garden Arboretum Trompenburg. Arboretum Trompenburg is not freely accessible and charges an entry fee, but in return you’ll enjoy a truly stunning park and garden.
Just outside Rotterdam lies the recreation area Bergse Bos and Rottemeren, located between Rotterdam and Zevenhuizen/Bleiswijk. You can reach the Rottemeren by boat, bike, or on foot by following the river Rotte. The park is also accessible by car, with several parking areas available. (See the walk and bike route from Prinsemolen Park to Rottemeren.) In Bergse Bos you’ll find Outdoor Valley, offering activities such as mountain biking, stand‑up paddleboarding, kayaking, climbing, and abseiling. There’s even an artificial ski slope for skiing, tubing, and snowboarding.
Between Rotterdam and Delft you’ll find the Ackerdijkse Plassen, a nature reserve perfect for a bicycle tour starting from Rotterdam Airport in the direction of Delft.
A wonderful day trip from Rotterdam is to the Biesbosch National Park. It’s about 30 minutes by car, but the best option is to take the Waterbus, where bicycles are also allowed.
